Oh (Big) Boy!

Well, it seems to be the season for toddlers graduating from cribs to big boy (or girl) beds. A couple of weeks ago, Edwin figured out that he's agile enough to climb out of his crib, open his door, and "escape" the confines of his formerly safe bedroom. We knew it was time to upgrade to the BBB (Big Boy Bed), but some logistical issues delayed the move. So for the past two weeks, Edwin has steadily been training his parents to show up on demand in the middle of the night whenever he cries. (Hey, don't judge. I just didn't want him to fall and break his neck) This child used to be the best sleeper!!! After settling down for the evening, we'd say nigh-night to Daddy, snuggle in the rocking chair while we said our prayers, then it was kisses & squeezes and off he went to dreamland, not to be heard from until at least 7am. But not lately. Lately, he's been struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep for the whole night. And of course, since we were terrified he'd get hurt climbing out of the crib, he cried and we answered. Now we're paying the price.

Yesterday, Edwin got his BBB, complete with new sheets & comforter, and Daddy's pillow (he's always loved that thing). All evening he kept running around talking about his "big boy bed! big boy bed!" I was cautiously optimistic and very hopeful that things would go smoothly. Boy was I wrong!!!! Once we finished our nightly routine, he laid down on the bed all snuggled up with his blankie and stuffed doggie. But as soon as I left the room, he freaked out and wanted nothing to do with his Big Boy Bed.
I won't go into the ensuing chaos, but let's just say it was a long night. Part of the issue is that Edwin has two parents (duh!). One parent wants to snuggle with Edwin in the bed in hopes of getting him to fall asleep easier, and the other parent says no way, just let him cry, he'll get used to it. Ahhh...the joys (and compromises) of parenting. Hopefully tonight will go better!!!

Oh girl. I won't tell you my thoughts on what I would do because you don't need a third parent in this. The only thing I CAN say and still remain unbiased is to, whatever you choose, just be consistent. Taylor isn't fully there yet either, but she's making progress. Just stick your ground and, by the time the new baby arrives, you'll have a perfect sleeping big boy. Or I will pray that that is the case anyway :)
